Sebastian Krawinkel @ INSIGHT OUT: production design  for "ANONYMOUS" (tbc)

Sebastian Krawinkel (DE) has worked on many American and European film productions as an art director, including “Inglorious Bastards” and  “The Bourne Supremacy”.

At INSIGHT OUT 2012, Sebastian will present his artistic approach as a production designer on Roland Emmerich’s “Anonymous”.

His presentation will deal with the conflict  between traditional methods of production design, and the technology-driven demands of modern digital production methods. This approach will be presented by going through every single step in the film production line, with over 180 pictures from his work. We’re very much looking forward to this thrilling lecture.

Bruno Tarrière @ INSIGHT OUT: hands-on workshop on sound design

Bruno Tarrière (FR) is one of the most well-known French sound designers, having worked on over 100 productions. We're delighted to welcome him at INSIGHT OUT 2012 for two half-day workshops, based on his recent work. Bruno will present his approach within our sound design facilities at the HFF. Primarily using ProTools as his mixing device, he' ll present a comprehensive workshop on sound design, introducing his work and answering questions from the participants as well.

After graduating, he studied electroacoustic music composition at the conservatory of Paris (the GMR class: a group of musical research) under the direction of Pierre Schaeffer and Guy Reibel. In 1980, he entered the Cinema School of Brussels: INSAS (the superior national institute of the arts and entertainments). After his studies, he started to work, first as sound recordist on film sets, then after few years, he decided to dedicate himself essentially to sound mixing and sound designing, but every now and then, he keeps continuing with great pleasure, to be sound recordist on location on many different films.

His professional expertise led him to work with many outstanding directors from all over the world, such as Emir Kusturica, Walter Sallees, Bruno Barreto, Jiang Wen, Luc Besson, Oliver Stone, Radu Mihaileanu, Sergei Bodrov etc.) His work was rewarded by many prizes: two Césars for best sound for "Jeanne d'Arc" and " Le concert", and two Golden Reel Awards for "Leon" and " Jeanne d'Arc".

The workshop can be booked separately.

Ludger Pfanz @ INSIGHT OUT: 3D storytelling

Ludger Pfanz  Prof. Ludger Pfanz was born in Schopfloch, Germany, in 1958. After      studying theatre and literary theory at the Free University of Berlin, he completed the degree course in filmmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg with honors. He has been an instructor and head of the studios at the University of Arts and Design at the ZKM Karlsruhe since 1997, as well as the spokesman of the Media Arts faculty since 2002. He graduated from the EAVE continuing education program for European producers in 2002. Prof. Ludger Pfanz works as a producer, director and author.
He is director and founder of "Expanded Cinema 3Digital Laboratory", the "Alliance 3D Karlsruhe", the international festival "Days of BEYOND-3 Dimensions", the international academic "3D Consortium" and the international symposium "3D and BEYOND".

While the demand of 3D content for cinemas and broadcasters increases, there is no real writing training for this specific space-oriented content that a stereoscopic film production offers. At the moment, we only see films in 2D with 3D effects mostly just for its own sake and predominantly for the emotional intensification of the viewing experience. Often considered as a new art form, they are only hybrids of 2D and 3D films with respect to the storytelling and aren't fully using the high potential of the dramaturgical possibilities that lie in 3D storytelling.

Prof. Pfanz developed a script theory, specially designed for developing and using the best possible approach to a stereoscopically produced story. His central idea is to approach the story to be told on a stage rather than being told in flat images. From this perspective you are able to architecture your conflict within the whole three- dimensional space. The tension can be created also within vertical, horizontal and parallax coordinates in addition to the traditional linear-timeline storytelling.

His workshop will revolve around his theory. You will get a deep insight into a different perspective in telling, presenting and shooting a compelling story in s3D.

The workshop can be booked separately.

KEMAL GÖRGÜLÜ @ INSIGHT OUT: broadcaster special

Looking at our rapidly changing work environment no one can really
anticipate how our global or even regional media market will change. Due to a shift away from tape-based camera systems every broadcaster is
confronted with a complex change process away from tape- towards file-based workflow.

Not only the acquisition sector is involved but every single step
within the pipeline. This pressure helps focussing on actions concerning
planning, enrolling and implementing file-based workflows - everywhere
starting from a single workstation at home up to huge backend
communication and management platforms for broadcasters. There is a
tremendous need for redesign, rethink and change concepts for integrated file-based workflows
. When broadcasters successfully enroll a new backbone system, it is inevitable to update, operate and improve it.

This global issue needs so many perspectives to be dealt with. INSIGHT OUT is offering a management and technical approach. This includes concepts for mobile and cross- platforms within the whole distribution chain. The lecture is designed for broadcasters planning to change, broadcasters in the middle of changing and broadcasters that have already changed.

Click here for the programme to see the specific lectures, workshops and visits for broadcasters.

Use this unique chance to meet experts from every field to solve your problems, be inspired and be understood!

Kemal Görgülü studied Media Economics at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and film directing at the Ecole Supérieure d'Audiovisuel (ESAV) in Toulouse.
In addition to European and German research projects in the domain of digital cinema, 3D cinema and 3D television, Kemal Görgülü worked in several projects for broadcasting companies, where he has particular experience and knowledge in the domains of file-based workflows and metadata models for the entire broadcast value chain.

While Peter Hjorth represents the cinematic sector, Kemal Görgülü will be the host and expert for the broadcasting industry. During INSIGHT OUT we will present his recent work. Two stereoscopic short movies have been directed by Kemal Görgülü. One of the two 3D movies is a documentary focusing on the change within the filmcrew dealing with the impact of the relatively new position of the stereographer.

This lecture can be booked separately.

WELCOME TO INSIGHT OUT 2012!

Welcome: INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy

19 – 23 March 2012

We are presently completing our preparations for INSIGHT OUT 2012, finalising lectures, case studies, hands-on workshops and visits. This year’s programme focuses on file-based workflow: the next step in digitalised film production.

Film professionals work in their well-defined and comfy islands of digitalisation. What’s missing is a universal system to implement daily, creative and management requirements in one file-based workflow. Such a system, when finally implemented, will have a huge impact on the collaborative process of filmmaking. Every aspect of creating digital media - from preproduction to postproduction, to working on location during a shoot - is sure to change.

The advantage of a file-based system is obvious: a faster, easier, safer and more transparent transfer of information through the film production process. A clear explanation of how to use this system efficiently, without risk or great expense, is the main goal of INSIGHT OUT 2012.

As a result of recent improvements in technology, media creators and broadcasters are moving from tape-based workflow systems towards file-based workflow systems. This change will inevitably result in an increase in effort in finding, planning and implementing new technologies, new personnel and new investment throughout every step in the production chain within the broadcaster.

We deliver workshops, discussions, lectures, visits to help broadcasters deal with this situation, featuring topics such as:

  • Process management as system design
  • Service management and support
  • Metadata concepts & management
  • Changing landscape in TV production
  • MAM/CMS systems: from ingest to archive
  • Different concepts for file-based workflow

leading to an in-house, global working strategy perfectly designed for the special needs of a modern broadcaster.

In 2011, the hands-on workshops we presented aroused such great enthusiasm that every participant attended a minimum of two all day workshops throughout the five days. This year, we will give you the chance to discover the benefits of applying a file-based workflow system to cinematography, editing, sound design, vfx or 3D. And, of course, all workshops can be booked separately from the lecture programme.

During the workshops, we will also showcase recent developments in 3D production with a handbook and Blu-ray disc exclusively produced for INSIGHT OUT in collaboration with Camelot Broadcast Services.

Participation fees:

5 days*: € 950** / € 1200 (incl. 1 handbook 3D-NOW! with 3D Blu-ray, worth 50 Euro )

3 days*: € 650** / € 800

1 workshop***:    €   80 / Students: € 50

2 workshops***: € 140 / Students: € 80

3 workshops***: € 200 / Students: € 100

*Participation fee includes: lectures, workshops, case studies, visits, shuttle bus, full catering and didactic material

**Early bird rebate for bookings until January 31, 2012

***Workshop fee includes: workshops, didactic material, beverages and snacks(no lunch)

INSIGHT OUT 2011 Completed Successfully!

Thank You!

Once again this year INSIGHT OUT has been successfully completed with five days full of inspiring lectures, meetings and workshops. We have picked out some of the highlights of this intensive week at INSIGHT OUT for you. Read on below!

First of all Programme Director Prof. Martin Steyer and the organising team would like to thank all the speakers, our partners and sponsors for the support they have shown, without which every lecture and especially the practical workshops would not have been possible.

We would like to express our thanks to all the participants that came from all over Europe and beyond and spent an enriching week in Potsdam. We hope to see many of you again in March 2012!

From March 14 - 18 we welcomed participants from 27 countries at HFF, joining the debate on the workflows of digital film production and the question as to how 3D contents can be brought to the screen.

During this international and interdisciplinary meeting, where top-class media professionals got in touch with filmmakers, directors, producers, cameramen and post-production experts, alongside the technical aspects of the digital film production, the focus was on the contents.

In fact all the technical questions were handled in terms of aesthetical and narrative issues. The result was very impressive: good atmosphere, creative minds and enlightening lectures.

We´d like to invite all old and new friends of INSIGHT OUT to JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!

Programme Highlights 2011

Jericca Cleland: Previsualization

Among others INSIGHT OUT was proud to host Jericca Cleland (CEO/CC0 Twenty One Inc.), who exposed the meaning of previsualization. More widespread in the US for big Hollywood productions than in Europe, previsualization is not only an important element of production planning, but also significantly influences the whole production and post-production workflow.

Thanks to this computer simulation of film projects, it is possible to estimate and solve in advance creative, practical and technical problems, simulating the film as a final version. Therefore, this technique not only completes the storyboard, but also allows the pre-production of visual effects and a targeted and cost-effective selection of camera settings and locations.

Programme Highlights 2011

Workshops

Seven hands-on workshops with topics such as High-end Digital Cinema, Look-Creation within the Camera, VFX, 3D Storytelling, Sound Design, DCP Mastering and Editing & Grading offered practical digital experience.

In particular, first class equipment was tested by our participants during the workshop High-end Digital Cinema: Heiko Merten (Camelot) explained the performances of three different types of camera, ARRI ALEXA, SONY PMW F3 and OLYMPUS I-SPEED, implementing varied handlings.

In addition, the workshop 3D Storytelling was particularly well filled. Trainers Florian Rettich (HD supervisor), Ludger Pfanz (producer, director) and Florian Maier (3D consult) explained the perspectives and the limits of three-dimensional storytelling to over 40 listeners.

Programme Highlights 2011

Stephan Heimbecher: 3D delivery requirements for International Broadcasters

The symposium ended up with the home-entertainment-segment. Stephan Heimbecher, Head of Innovations & Standards at Sky, exposed the current difficulties and future challenges of 3D in the home environment: equipment and technology should be optimized, the 3D cinema content should be adapted for TV, putting forward the production of one's own contents so that 3D will be presentable and attractive in the home segment.

Programme Highlights 2011

Screenings

Among the highlights at INSIGHT OUT we also rate the exclusive screening of Susanne Biers' Oscar-winning film In a Better World, three days before the German release in cinemas.

Another highlight was the screening of pina, whose 3D supervisor François Garnier already explained on Tuesday the stereoscopic challenges of Wim Wenders' dance film.

Programme Highlights 2011

Panel Discussion

As meeting place for making contacts for filmmakers, the HFF, together with media.connect brandenburg and Kodak, invited INSIGHT OUT participants and the media sector of Berlin and Brandenburg to a networking dinner.

In addition, during a panel discussion with Peter Körte (FAZ), Keith Partridge (cameraman, BBC), Nicolas Brown (director, BBC) and conducted by Prof. Martin Hagemann (HFF), the following question was discussed: "Aesthetics determines equipment or the other way around?"

The answer: the core of the film is and will remain the story. Through 3D productions, aesthetic standards and conceptions develop in a new way and can be implemented in an innovative manner.

Programme Highlights 2011

Trainers

Among others INSIGHT OUT trainers were also: Claudia Meglin (digital workflow design expert und producer / DE), Peter Hjorth (colourist for In a Better World / DK), Kemal Görgülü (Flying Eye / DE), Heiko Merten (cameraman and cinematographer / DE), Kay Dombrowski (AVIS DS artist / DE), Lorna Lewis (digital cinema mastering engineer / UK), Prof. Glenn Gebhard (film and video producer, director of documentaries and narrative films / US) and Mario Congreve (director of photography, cameraman and producer / US).

New Sponsor

VFF

We are very happy to announce that INSIGHT OUT has a new sponsor:

The VFF, Verwertungsgesellschaft für Film- und Fernsehproduzenten, is a collecting society that collects and distributes the payment of royalties on behalf of right holders. Situated in Munich with Prof. Dr. Johannes Kreile as CEO, the VFF has over 900 members, most of which are German producers and broadcasters. VFF also provides support for film students and social projects related to the film industry.

Thanks a lot for the support!

Wednesday, March 16

Panel Discussion @ INSIGHT OUT

Prof. Martin Hagemann will host this year´s panel discussion at INSIGHT OUT dealing with the question if equipment defines the aesthetics or the other way around. We are expecting a controversial discussion on the right choice of equipment trying to achieve the best aesthetic results even though dealing with financial pressure.

The participants of the panel discussion will be Peter Körte (German journalist / Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung), Nawid Goudarzi (Head of Equipment / Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting RBB), Keith Partridge (DoP / BBC´s "Human Planet") and Nick Brown (Emmy Award winning director & producer / UK). Don´t miss this intense discussion and register for INSIGHT OUT right now.

Both films, partially shot in Cuba, were co-productions with television stations in the USA.

The producers will discuss financing, production and distribution of these two lower budget HD films. They will highlight shooting in politically controlled locations, equipment used, shooting in difficult climates, mixing HD formats, as well as workflow issues. The producers will also skype in the PBS executive producer, Steve Kranke, and PBS editor, Susanne Schwibs from the United States.

During the presentation, the producers will screen segments of their finished film, "Cuba: A Lifetime of Passion" (2005), and edited sequences from their yet to be released PBS film, "Patria o Muerte: The Cuban Revolution"(2011).

A Participant's View

Eggert Gunnarsson about INSIGHT OUT 2010

"To get to grips with the development of the digital media world of today is no small task but for me INSIGHT OUT 2010 was very useful to do just that.

Eggert GunnarssonThe lectures were very interesting and even though some of them might not have direct impact on my day to day job they gave me a greater understanding of what is happening in our industry now. The workshops were of particular interest to me and I was very pleased with both of the ones I managed to attend.

I think for what INSIGHT OUT intends to do it does it exceedingly well. The five days at HFF in Potsdam were fantastic!"

All About Stereo 3D

Lectures and Workshops 2010

HFF was very proud to welcome leading experts on stereo 3D production at INSIGHT OUT 2010 and learn from their expertise in lectures and hands-on workshops:

Heinrich Hertz Institute

Prof. Martin Hagemann shared his experiences with financing and producing independent stereo 3D films. Screen writer, director and producer Nikolai Vialkowitsch and sound designer Dominik Avenwedde presented the documentary The Eye 3D about the most powerful optical telescope in the world.

The Post Republic invited our participants to visit its facilities and meet the post-production experts that are currently mixing the British 3D feature Streetdance 3D.

Stop Motion Animation in Stereo 3D

Another group of participants went to the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute and experienced a 180° projection with IOSONSO sound system as well as interactive movable 3D objects.

Joe Lewis gave an introduction in the use of motion control for movies such as Alice in Wonderland and demonstrated hands-on stereo 3D stop motion animation with Brian Van’t Hul (VFX Coraline). Two groups of participants could produce their own 3D sequences, starting with 3D basics and little webcams and raising the level of equipment up to a digital HD stills camera on a motion control device.

Stereo 3D Workshop

Vis-à-vis another group was shooting 3D in one of HFF’s own studios. Phil Streather offered a workshop demonstrating a whole digital live action workflow and additionally held a lecture about his numerous 3D and also 4D projects and the different ways of technical realisation.

HFF is member of the research consortium PRIME - PRoduction- and Projection-Techniques for Immersive MEdia. Prof Dr. Claudia Wegener, Jesko Jockenhövel and Mariann Gibbon from the Media Sciences Department presented their recent research results on the acceptance of 3D content and the impact of 3D films on children. HFF’s first live action 3D film Topper doesn’t give up was shown for the first time during INSIGHT OUT 2010 and will be used for acceptance tests in the next months.

D-Cinema and HDTV

Case Studies @ INSIGHT OUT 2010

Peter Hjorth 2nd Unit Director and VFX Supervisor Peter Hjorth and Digital Colorist Dirk Meier invited all INSIGHT OUT participants to get a deep insight into their work on Lars von Trier’s Antichrist.
The idea of discussing digital workflows with regard to their potentialities of realising artistic requirements was done in a brilliant way during this session.

Snorri Thorisson

The second case study focused on the HDTV mini series Hamarinn / The Cliff. Producer Snorri Thorisson, Head of Postproduction Eggert Baldvinsson and DoP Vidir Sigurdsson from Iceland spoke about the added creative freedom of keeping the whole workflow in 4k resolution until the final down conversion.

Hands-on Workshops

A Variety of Digital Workflows at INSIGHT OUT 2010

In addition to the two stereo 3D workshops, four all-day courses offered practical digital experiences with different core themes:

High-End Digital Cinema

HDTV Workshop

Using a Sony F35 which recorded on an OB-1, participants could shoot on a real film set. Miguel Ferros explained the entire workflow with data ingest and editing done on Apple Final Cut Pro and finishing using HFF’s Nucoda Filmmaster.

Independent Digital Cinema and Documentary

Kumaran Herold and Till Vielrose introduced participants to working with the Canon EOS 7D and post-production entirely done in Apple Final Cut Studio. This workshop received a lot of attention from young filmmakers interested in low budget digital production.

HDTV Series Production

Christian Conrad

Jan Fröhlich of CinePostproduction presented a workflow particularly suited to producing for HDTV: a Panasonic HPX 3700 camera and post-production on a combination of Avid Media Composer and DS. Various shooting locations inside and outside, with LEDs and green screen demonstrated a wide range of possible situations that participants might have to manage one day.

Film Sound for Digital Movie Productions

Using the audio workflow for motion pictures as a guiding principle Christian Conrad illustrated all aspects of sound design through hands-on examples of his last project Jerry Cotton.

Previsualization @ INSIGHT OUT 2010

Join us for an overview of the powerful paradigm of previsualization on Tuesday, 23 March 2010, and witness the shape of things to come

In challenging economic times and with increasingly sophisticated audiences, narrative filmmakers are seeking more efficient ways to produce higher quality products. Surprisingly, the solution for many has come from the virtual production world provided by computer animation. 3D previsualization is a collaborative process that enables filmmakers to explore light-weight, easily-modifiable versions of shots, sequences, or entire films. From creative exploration to technical problem solving, previs enhances visual communication and enables creators to optimize their entire workflow from pre-production through post-production, regardless of whether their final medium is live-action, stop-motion animation, or full CG.

Jericca ClelandJericca Cleland is the CEO/CCO of Twenty One Inc, a cross-media film development and preproduction studio dedicated to bringing stronger visual stories to the screen more efficiently through CG previsualization. Raised as a filmmaker in the story-centric environment of Pixar Animation Studios, she pursues the creation of high-caliber films with narrative depth. An experienced CG cinematographer, Jericca designed the filming and staging of features such as Toy Story 2, and Finding Nemo. She is also a writer and live-action producer-director, bringing her combined cross-media expertise to bear on the vision and planning of all Twenty One Inc projects.

INSIGHT OUT 2009 successfully completed!

INSIGHT OUT 2009 offered a look into the digital future of film and TV production in 2D and 3D. From 23 to 27 March, 50 participants from 20 countries came to Potsdam-Babelsberg to learn from renowned and award-winning experts.

Focus Topic 3D Production

HFF was very proud to welcome the leading experts on producing 3D content in Babelsberg last week.

3D Dreamteam at INSIGHT OUT 2009Steve Schklair, CEO of 3ality, provided insight into the production of live action 3D content using 3ality productions as examples, such as the concert film U2 3D as well as 3D live broadcasts of American football/NFL games. He gave interesting insights into how camera work has to be adjusted for 3D and what the impact on budgets is.

Robert Neuman, stereoscopic supervisor at Disney Animation, explained what he calls the "grammar of 3D movies": how to use "depth scripts" to relate stereoscopic depth to the audience' emotional involvement with a specific scene. Disney's latest animation movie Bolt served as a case study.

Brian Van't Hul, VFX supervisor, illustrated with plenty of footage the complex set up for Coraline, a stop-motion puppet animation to be released in Europe in the coming months. Instead of shooting with two cameras simultaneously, a single camera was shifted from left to right (using motion control) to capture both views of the 3D image. That obviously only works with puppets holding still for multiple exposures...

3D Workshop at INSIGHT OUT 2009Chris Ralph and Hubert Henle of Dolby Laboratories introduced participants to mastering and distribution processes for digital 3D cinema releases.

The lectures by these renowned experts were complemented by a practical, hands-on stereo 3D workshop led by Josef Kluger and Florian Kaltwasser of KUKFilm Produktion, Munich.

The German research consortium PRIME gave an overview on future technical and commercial developments regarding 3D. 3DTV already looms on the horizon, but technical standards for production and distribution are still missing. The PRIME experts emphasised that for a breakthrough of 3D in home entertainment, so-called autostereoscopic displays are required, which can be used without 3D glasses. Although the first displays of this type are already available, they are not yet ready for the mass market.

50 Participants from 20 Countries

Participants of INSIGHT OUT 200950 participants came to Potsdam-Babelsberg to learn what's new in digital production and 3D. What makes INSIGHT OUT unique is the mixture of film and broadcasting professionals attending this symposium every year: young and experienced professionals, producers, directors, film school teachers, DoPs, animators and post-production specialists alike from 20 different countries. The 50 participants came from Bulgaria, China/Hong Kong, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Another highlight at this edition of INSIGHT OUT were the Short & Digital Hands-on Workshops. 5 workshops were also offered last week: for the INSIGHT OUT participants and on a second day for film and broadcasting professionals from Berlin-Brandenburg. With the workshops on the second day fully booked and a lot of positive feedback, we are encouraged to offer them again next year.

2D Digital Production

Although 3D was an important topic at INSIGHT OUT 2009, the production reality for the vast majority of European film and broadcasting professionals is still 2D. Therefore a selection of innovative 2D case studies was presented at the 2009 edition of INSIGHT OUT.

Julita and Rafal WieczynskiThe Polish biopic Popieluzko was released in mid-February and has already had over 1 million visitors in Poland alone. It was a particular pleasure for the organisors of INSIGHT OUT to welcome director Rafal Wieczynski and producer Julita Swiercz Wieczynska as trainers following visit to Potsdam as participants in 2007. Rafal, Julita and their Polish colleagues explained the solution of handling more than 20 terrabyte of data for the movie’s 4K digital intermediate process.

Amin MatalqaJordan's first movie in 50 years Captain Abu Raed served as a case study for an entirely digital production pipeline. Author and director Amin Matalqa, supported by DI consultant Claudia Meglin and colourist Mark Read, spoke about the rationale for choosing to shoot digitally rather than on 35mm. He highlighted the challenges in production resulting from this decision and explained some of his creative choices regarding light and colouring.

Keith Partridge Series producer Jonathan Renouf and DoP Keith Partridge provided insight into the current state-of-the-art for HDTV productions using the BBC series Earth - Power of the Planet as an example. With shoots in very hostile environments (never before climbed mountains, glaciers etc.), they put the HD equipment to an extreme test. Jonathan and Keith offered the producer's and a technical perspective on this production.

High-End Digital Cinema I - tape-based

Florian Rettich and SonyF35

Using a Sony F35 which recorded onto HD Cam SR tapes, participants could shoot on a real set. Florian Rettich, independent HD consultant and DIT, explained the entire workflow with data ingest and editing done on Apple Final Cut Pro and finishing touches put to the footage using Autodesk Lustre.

High-End Digital Cinema II – file-based

D21 Workshop

A workflow based on RAW-data was put together for this workshop led by Miguel Ferros, freelance specialist for file-based workflows. An ARRI D21 was equipped with anamorphic lenses and the images were recorded on a Codex digital recorder. This was directly connected to an Avid Media Composer on set with finishing carried out on a Digital Vision Filmmaster.

Lecture Digital Image Fine-Tuning and Restoration // Mike Inchalik

New image processing techniques are available to remove the increasing array of artifacts from original capture, conceal the artifacts created in post-production and mask the artifacts introduced in compression.

Advancements in noise and grain reduction and in the ability to improve apparent resolution can deliver extraordinary cinematic images, create better blow-ups, and produce stunning Blu-ray discs. Mike Inchalik, President of Lowry Digital Images, will discuss in his lecture these recent advancements and display a series of "before-and-after" images to demonstrate some of the capabilities of today’s digital image processing tools.

Sound Case Study: Waltz with Bashir

Lars Ginzel worked as re-recording mixer on Waltz with Bashir and Noemi Hampel made the film's sound design.

Using sound files from the original production, they will be demonstrating how the complex sound scapes of this film have been built. Lars has won the German Film Award in Gold for the sound design of Requiem, and worked on many German and international co-productions movies as re-recording mixer. Noemi has worked on films such as Krabat, Anonyma and Last King of Scotland as sound editor, recordist and sound designer. Lars and Noemi are both graduates of HFF "Konrad Wolf". This lecture will be held at Elektrofilm, Berlin.

Traditionally, we organise visits to post-production houses in Berlin as part of the programme. This year, our partners for these visits have been particularly active in offering case studies with different focus topics as part of the visits. The 4 post-production companies that will be visited are:

cine plus, CinePostProduction and RiseFX will also be having very interesting case studies, which will be announced shortly.

HDTV Case Study: the BBC's "Earth - Power of the Planet" // Jonathan Renouf and Keith Partridge

Earth: Power of the Planet was a highly successful, BAFTA nominated series exploring the story of our planet, made by the BBC with National Geographic and ZDF as co-producers.

It featured high quality cinematography, ground breaking CGI and a charismatic presenter. In this presentation, series producer Jonathan Renouf and director of photography Keith Partridge will discuss how the series was made, the problems they faced, and the novel solutions that emerged. Subjects covered will include the choice of cameras (no less than 8 formats were used), the challenges of location shooting, CGI, post production workflow and dealing with co-producers.

Overview on Digital Film, HDTV and Digital Production Workflows

Claudia Meglin (D/IS) and Mark Read (USA) will be holding the opening lecture on Monday. They have a tough challenge: to summarise the developments in digital production, D-cinema and high definition TV in 90 minutes.

But we know that they are the best people for the job. Claudia and Mark are well known experts in Production & PostProduction; advising Film Production Clients and Solution Providers alike, for almost 2 decades. Besides that, they have also gained an excellent reputation for their instructional work at workshops, conferences, seminars and film schools. To list just a few of their combined film credits: Captian Abu Raed, Clint Eastwood's Changeling, Flags of our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima and many more.

The Third Dimension of Digital Cinema

2009 is viewed by many as the year that could bring the break through for stereo 3D. 15 movies have been scheduled for release this year, including potential blockbusters such as Paramount’s Monster vs. Alien, Disney’s Up, Twentieth Century’s Ice Age 3 and most notably James Cameron’s Avatar. Always being at the vanguard of developments in digital production technologies, the production of stereoscopic 3D movies is at the centre this year’s INSIGHT OUT lecture programme.

We are delighted that the following renowned experts have agreed to share their knowledge with our participants of how to get the third dimension into the movies.

Robert Neuman, stereoscopic supervisor with Disney Feature Animation, will present a start-to-finish case study for Bolt. The lecture delves into the principles that apply to live action and animated 3D films alike. It will highlight how the added dimension of 3D depth can be integrated into the filmmaking process as a creative element. The aesthetics and comfort factors associated with stereoscopic 3D will be discussed, as well as the techniques and production pipeline used in making the film.

Steve Schklair, founder of 3ality, is considered to be one of the leading specialists on stereo 3D production. 3ality were one of the producers of the critically acclaimed U2 3D. In his lecture, he will talk about the shooting and post-production of live action in stereo 3D, using one of his recent projects as a case study.

The presentation of 3D digital images imposes new challenges for mastering and distribution of Digital Cinema content. Richard Welsh from Dolby Laboratories Inc. discusses some of these challenges based on an overview of the availble theatrical 3D presentation systems. The focus of his lecture will be requirements for the mastering process of 3D content, 3D subtitling, and the opportunities to use theatrical 3D presentation systems for non-feature content such as life transmission, games, and interactive entertainment.

A joint lecture by the PRIME research consortium will offer a glimpse into the future of 3D production, such as panoramic 3D installations.

Euromed II Final Conference

INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy participated in the final conference of the European Union's Euromed Audiovisual II programme. IO had benefitted from Euromed-funding in 2006 and 2007, so that each year 25 filmmakers from the Southern Mediterranean countries were invited to Potsdam to take part in the INSIGHT OUT symposium. Here is a brief and selective list of some of the key points from the conference:

  • A total of 15 million Euros was available for Euromed II. The programme supported projects in the fields of film development, distribution, promotion, exhibition, training and networking. It has achieved substantial and tangible results, i.e.
    • 130 films received support in terms of distribution, promotion or exhibition,
    • a database of Southern Mediterranean film professionals was set up containing 1700 records,
    • a total of 40 sessions were organised by the training & development projects which were atttended by 728 professionals from the region etc.
  • Only two of the total of 12 funded projects are able to continue in some form beyond the Euromed II programme: Medscreen continues with their distribution & promotion support and the further expansion of the Arab cinema directory. And INSIGHT OUT offers scholarships for film professionals from the region again in 2009 to attend the annual workshop in Potsdam thanks to the support by the European Broadcasting Union.
  • Getting films made and getting audiences to see these films is an incredibly difficult task in the majority of MEDA countries. Further support is needed and so all speakers agreed that a new Euromed programme is required. Consultations are taking place at European level. However, at this point in time, it is unclear whether the EU Commission will decide on the set up of another Euromed programme in 2009.
  • The Euromed Reflection group has developed a comprehensive proposal for a strategy for the development of a Euro-Mediterranean Audiovisual Cooperation. At the heart of the proposed strategy lies the creation of a "Medimage" fund that will support the production and distribution of film projects in cooperation between at least 2 Mediterranean and 1 European partners.
  • Looking at digital technologies, very little is at all available yet in the region in terms of high defition or digital cinema standard. Although technology was hardly talked about at the conference, from our point of view this is an important issued to consider also in the development of a new Euromed programme in order to narrow the technical gap between the MEDA countries and Europe, the USA and Asia.

INSIGHT OUT Workshop in Beirut

42 students of St. Joseph University attended the Digital Cinema Workshop given by INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy in Beirut.

Interesting discussions ensued at the end of the introductions. The students were particularly keen on the practical workshop using 3 Panasonic HVX 200 cameras, which was given by experienced DoP David Serge.

Although video is widely used by film-makers in the region, digital cinema (2K and higher image quality) and HDTV standards are rarely met. This is also partly due to the fact that no digitale cinema screens are yet available and none of the TV channels in the region have a HDTV strategy or rollout plan yet. Besides the hands-on workshop, the following presentations / lectures were given during the workshop:

  1. Introduction to Digital Cinema - by Ursula Reber
  2. HD and Digital Cinema in the Arab World - by Elie Yazbek
  3. Example and review of post-production workflow for the Lebanese documentary "The One Man Village" using the HDCam format - by Riad Chebli

If you are interested in these presentations, feel free to contact INSIGHT OUT and we can forward them to you be e-mail.

Thanks again to the organisors from Beirut DC for inviting the INSIGHT OUT team to Beirut and for letting us participate in their excellent festival!

INSIGHT OUT 2008

The digital revolution in slow motion!

Potsdam, 17/03/2008. Over six days, 51 filmmakers, directors, producers and postproduction experts from 26 countries came together for the international symposium INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy 2008 from March 10 to 15, 2008 in Potsdam-Babelsberg. There were discussions at the Academy for Film and Television „Konrad Wolf“ (HFF) with top-notch media professionals about the new working processes for digital film production and their experiences with high-definition formats for D-Cinema and HDTV. The link to practical experience was provided with the first ever staging of a HD Expo.

The trainers and participants of INSIGHT OUT 2008 concluded that the comprehensive digitalisation of film production is irreversible, has developed less rapidly than had been expected still only a few years ago. The digital revolution in the film industry is progressing step-by-step and is far from over, The range of digital technology such as digital film cameras, storage media, colour correction software and the associated hardware is constantly growing. The consequence is a much greater complexity in the working processes which require a great technical understanding from the filmmaker. The quesitons "Which formats and technology are the most suitable for my next project? What would the appropriate optimal data-based workflow look like?" were to the fore for the participants of this year's INSIGHT OUT.

Answers to these questions were offered by the HD Expo which was held within the framework of INSIGHT OUT. A complete high-definition digital production chain was presented publicly for the first time in the Berlin-Brandenburg region on March 11 and 12 as part of a "hands-on" presentation. 180 filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany and abroad came together in the Babelsberg film school in a manufacturer-neutral setting to try out digital film technology to the value of 2.5 million Euros. The exhibition included a set with six digital cameras, a storage area network as well as digital editing and colour correction systems.

Ulrich Sparrer (HFF "Konrad Wolf"), responsible for the technical design of HD Expo: „Just presenting the products is nothing new. We wanted to create a big playground for digital technology for interested filmmakers where they could play through digital production processes from beginning to end with the systems of different manufacturers.“

The whole spectrum of possibilities offered by digital production methods were illustrated in INSIGHT OUT's programme of lectures: Gerald Gutschmidt of Industrial Light and Magic described the lavish production of the digital effects for „Transformers“. How low-budget productions can also profit from digital technology was explained by Stefan Grandinetti, HFF graduate and the first German DoP to work with the Red One digital camera: „The Red One is a genuine revolution for me. Unlike other cameras, it is very reasonable cost-wise and offers an alternative to the classical 35mm workflow through a simple data processing and storage.“

INSIGHT OUT has since established itself as a networking platform and contact point for all those filmmakers in Europe who are interested in digital technology. This year, an online forum was launched for the professional exchange between participants and trainers – one of the first prominent users was the former INSIGHT OUT lecturer and triple Oscar-winner Jim Rygiel. INSIGHT OUT participants, HD Expo exhibitors and the Berlin-Brandenburg media industry also had an opportunity to meet and make contacts at the Matchmaking Dinner initiated by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

The symposium INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy was held this year for the fourth time. Under the banner of „Just do it in HD!“, the training programme with renowned speakers of the international production scene was geared to participants from Europe, the Southern Mediterranean region and Asia.

INSIGHT OUT is organised by the Academy for Film & Television (HFF) "Konrad Wolf" and supported by the EU via the MEDIA Programme. The partners for the international HFF Academy INSIGHT OUT are Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg GmbH and European Broadcasting Union, as well as leading companies as sponsors.

This time round, the planning of the programme was in the hands of the HFF's vice-president Prof. Martin Steyer, who also spoke about sound in the digital age, and Prof. Ulrich Weinberg of the Hasso Plattner Institut, who served in addition as the chairman for the concluding Film School Day.

The HFF "Konrad Wolf" is the oldest and largest training institution of its kind in Germany with its 550 students in 11 courses of studies. The artistic and practical training is conducted on the highest level thanks to the latest technology and experienced teaching staff - intensive contacts link the HFF on a national and international level with numerous academies, universities and research institutions in the field of film and television.

Fully Paid Scholarships Launched to Upskill Film & TV Professionals from the Southern Mediterranean in Digital Filmmaking

Potsdam, 09/07/2007. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Film and Television University “Konrad Wolf” Potsdam (HFF) announced today that they will sponsor several professionals from the film and broadcasting industries to participate in INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy 2008.

HDTV & D-Cinema training for the Southern Mediterranean
Film and broadcasting professionals from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey can apply for the EBU Scholarships for the Southern Mediterranean Rim for the INSIGHT OUT symposium 2008 by contacting the INSIGHT OUT office. The scholarships encompass all seminar costs, travel expenses and accommodation during the workshop.

The introduction of digital production tools is transforming traditional workflows in film and TV production. However, for professionals from the Southern Mediterranean countries, there are hardly any affordable training programmes to learn about these new digital production methods. In 2006 and 2007, INSIGHT OUT / HFF Academy offered workshops for a total of 50 professionals from those countries thanks to funding from the European Union’s Euromed Audiovisual II Programme. Due to the programme’s guidelines, this funding is no longer available. It is unclear, whether the EU will continue to fund Euromed Audiovisual II beyond the end of the programme in 2008.

INSIGHT OUT Programme Director Prof. Ulrich Weinberg says: “Thanks to the generous support and commitment from EBU, we are delighted that we can continue to invite professionals from the Southern Mediterranean to INSIGHT OUT, who were a great enrichment for the last two conferences.”

EBU: the largest worldwide network of broadcasters
The Geneva-based EBU is the largest professional association of national broadcasters in the world. It serves 721 active members in 52 countries in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle-East and 5146 associate members in 3029 countries around the world. On behalf of its members, the EBU negotiates broadcasting rights for major sports events, owns and operates the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, organises programme exchanges, is the centre for co-productions and acquisitions, and provides a full range of other operational, commercial, technical, legal and strategic services.
