Overview on Digital Film

The lecture will give an overview of the worldwide efforts to standardize digital formats, recording and presentation technologies and of the current production chain in the digital film industry. Using recent film projects as the basis for his lecture, Mike Christmann will talk about real world experience in digital film making and the workflows it requires. Focus topics will be: camera, post-production, current initiatives (i.e. Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the Digital Cinema Initiative of major US studios, several European initiatives and research projects), High Definition television - HDTV (update on current trends, formats & standards for digital broadcasting) and - of course - 3D in the cinema and for the home.



About Mike Christmann
Mike Christmann (Germany) studied Telecommunication Technology at the University of Applied Science Wiesbaden. After his studies he worked for "Broadcast Television Systems" (BTS) in Darmstadt, Germany as a Systems Development Engineer, Project Manager for broadcast stations and head of Product Management of the Film Imaging Products. In 1999 he became Director of Product Management at "Philips Digital Video Systems" with worldwide responsibility for two business units, headquartered in Germany. In 2000 he was appointed as vice president of the business unit Film Imaging at "Philips DVS", which became later "Thomson Multimedia". Since 2002 Mike Christmann is a partner at "FLYING EYE Management Consultants for Media Investments" where he is in charge of digital film & post production, workflow design for digital media, technology and strategy.
